Mr. Jean Mballa Mballa of Le Centre Régional Africain pour le Développement Endogène et Communautaire (CRADEC), Cameroon, is the new chair of the TJNA Executive Council for the period 2024- 2027. He was elected during the 7th Triennial General Assembly which took place in Uganda from 10 to 11 October 2024.  

Ms. Nada Trigui from L'Observatoire Tunisien de l'Economie (OTE), Tunisia was elected as Vice Chairperson. Also elected to the council were James Muraguri, Institute of Public Finance (Kenya), Gibons Mwabukusi, Policy Forum (Tanzania), Benedict Doh, Ghana Integrity Initiative (Ghana), Marieme Soda MBACKE, Citoyens Actifs pour la Justice Sociale (CAJUST), Senegal, Isaac Mwaipopo, Centre for Trade Policy and Development (Zambia), Bertha Phiri, Malawi Economic Justice Network (Malawi), Jean-Paul Mulyanga, Conférence Épiscopale Nationale du Congo (CENCO) DRC, Omar Ghannam, Social Justice Platform (Egypt), and Eunice Musiime, Akina Mama wa Afrika (Uganda). 

The General Assembly brought together TJNA members to discuss the next chapter of the network and the current tax landscape in Africa, reflecting the need for urgent reforms and advocacy in response to shifting global governance and financial structures. 

Speaking after his election, Mr. Mballa Mballa emphasised his commitment to strengthening the network as a true Pan-African advocate for tax justice and a formidable partner in ensuring that Africa’s voice in a new global dispensation around sustainable domestic resource mobilisation is no longer muzzled. 

“We will continue to prioritise the fight against Illicit Financial Flows, promote fair taxation, and champion responsible management of public debt. We will also empower our youth and women in the area of tax justice by strengthening their capacities and building strategic partnerships with governments, regional institutions, and civil society organisations to drive meaningful change,” Mr. Mballa Mballa added. 

TJNA’s Executive Director, Ms. Chenai Mukumba shared insights into both internal and external challenges that shaped the network’s journey over the past three years. She emphasised TJNA’s accomplishments and growth under the current strategic plan, setting a forward-looking tone for the assembly.  

“TJNA is set to amplify its impact, driving meaningful tax reforms that will empower African economies and support the liberation of its people from systemic financial inequities,” she added. 

The work being done by TJNA and its members is crucial to building a new generation of tax justice champions by fostering collective actions, ensuring that citizens are informed, engaged, and capable of advocating for their socio-economic rights.
