The first Steering Committee meeting of The African Parliamentary Network on Illicit Financial Flows and Taxation (APNIFFT) in 2023 was held in Diani, Kenya, from 6th to 9th March 2023.
The meeting discussed, among other things, the plan for action for 2023. Key discussion topics included a review of the draft APNIFFT constitution, a plan for launching regional caucuses, membership drive and the advocacy plan.
While welcoming the members to the meeting APNIFFT Steering Committee Chairperson Dr. Khanyisile Tshabalala reiterated the important role Africa parliamentarians must play in collectively contributing to the fight against illicit financial flows in the continent through the enactment of appropriate laws.
“As the representatives of the people, African parliamentarians are an integral part accountability process in that they hold governments to account for the mobilization and usage of scarce public resources for the benefit of the people,” Dr. Tshabalala added.
APNIFFT is a flagship programme coordinated by TJNA with an overall objective to provide a platform for its members, the African legislators, to strategize, learn from each other and build their capacities in tackling Illicit financial flows and tax injustice in the continent. The platform facilitates its members to undertake advocacy related dialogue and debates in a simplified manner on Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), tax governance and Domestic Resource Mobilisation (DRM) in Africa.
