The International Day of Education, celebrated annually on January 24, highlights the crucial role of education in fostering peace, sustainable development, and global unity. This day emphasizes how education can transform societies, create opportunities, and support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The theme for 2025, "Learning for Lasting Peace," highlights the importance of education in building stable communities and empowering individuals.
Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) joins civil society organizations and intergovernmental bodies in commemorating this important occasion.
During the 2024 edition of the International Tax Justice Academy (ITJA), 35 participants from 16 African countries gained valuable skills through a series of intermediate-level modules focused on transforming taxation and revenue management. The ITJA, inaugurated in 2016 as a pan-African initiative, has been pivotal in strengthening capacities within the tax justice space to enhance knowledge and skills of tax justice advocates.
ITJA aims to generate knowledge on critical areas around tax and create a platform to deepen participants' understanding of tax governance and its relation to economic development, poverty reduction, and social justice.
TJNA’s Capacity Building Coordinator, Geoffrey Sirima, explains that the Academy employs a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach to learning, combining theory with real-world application.
“Through case studies, discussions, and interactive exercises, participants delve into tax issues on both local and global scales, engaging with topics like tax evasion, Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), and the need for reform in the international tax system,” Mr. Sirima adds.
TJNA, in collaboration with partners, is working to bring about lasting change and build a future where integrity and fairness guide Africa's growth.
On this International Day of Education, we renew our commitment to shaping a new Africa where tax justice is central.
