The Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) will be participating at the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78), which is taking place from the 16th to the 23rd September 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. UNGA is an annual gathering that holds immense significance as a platform for global collaboration toward coherent, rights-based, interconnected recommendations on global economic governance and the systemic and historical inequalities that define it.

Tax Justice Network Africa will be participating in the Assembly program as follows;

SDG Action Weekend: 16th September 2023

TJNA Executive Director Chenai Mukumba will be a panelist at the session titled “Gender Equality and the Rights of All Women and Girls in All their Diversity” on Saturday, 16th September 2023. The SDG Summit is convened by the UN General Assembly and occurs every four years. The 2023 Summit marks the mid-point of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It therefore holds immense significance in galvanising actions and commitments from world leaders and non-state actors to steer the world back on course towards realising the 2030 Agenda and SDGs.

Global People’s Assembly (GPA): 18th September 2023

Ms Mukumba will also be a panelist at the Global People’s Assembly session titled “Feminist Economy”, which will be held on Monday, 18 September 2023. The Global People’s Assembly (GPA) brings people’s representatives together and creates a strong voice at the SDG Summit for the midpoint of Agenda 2030. It is the culmination of community and national People's Assemblies in 35 countries and counting, where representatives of marginalised and excluded groups and civil society monitored and discussed the SDG implementation. Its objective is to bring civil society together and ensure that governments uphold their commitments, including the overarching principle of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs: to Leave No One Behind.

High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development: 20th September 2023

Ms Mukumba will then participate as a responder at the High-Level Dialogue on Financing for Development session titled “Promoting inclusive and effective international tax cooperation and mobilising domestic resources” on Wednesday, 20th September 2023. The Dialogue is a platform for UN Member States and other stakeholders to reinvigorate international commitment to the Addis Agenda, which supports implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will bring together Heads of State and Government and other senior officials, representatives of the private sector and civil society, international financial institutions, including multilateral development banks, academia and other relevant actors.
