A new report by Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) and Publish What You Pay Zambia calls for a revamp of Zambia’s mining tax regime if the country is to reap the benefits of the global energy sector's shift from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption to renewable energy sources.

The report, which will be launched on 27th April 2023, notes that Zambia stands to benefit the energy transition due to her endowment with abundant natural resources, particularly metals that are critical to the transition.

· Zambia’s Copper amid the Energy Transition ‘A new dawn for mining or repeating past mistakes?’

The report, which is co-authored by TJNA Policy Officer Mukupa Nsenduluka and Mbewe Kalikeka takes a closer look at Zambia’s Mining Tax Regime which is known for its instability, and fluctuation on a yearly basis due to changes in metal prices and sometimes due to the government in power.

The report notes that the extent to which Zambia will benefit from the energy transition depends on her ability to reposition herself for the transition. If the transition proves successful, Zambia could generate unprecedented revenue that could be invested in education, healthcare, social protection, and infrastructure. It highlights some of the key mining taxation issues that need to be addressed for the transition to benefit the country.
