Tax Justice Network Africa will collaborate with the Addis Tax Initiative on domestic resource mobilisation and advance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) becomes the 25th member organisation of the Addis Tax Initiative (ATI). Both institutions officialised the membership agreement this Wednesday, 19th May 2021.  As a supporting member of the ATI, TJNA endorses the goals and principles outlined in the ATI Declaration 2025 and will collaborate with the ATI’s 62 partner countries, development partners and supporting organisations on effective domestic resource mobilisation (DRM).

Joining hands with ATI furthers TJNA’s input to the broader and global conversations on tax justice. It reemphasises the role of TJNA as a strategic connector between networks, governments, civil society organisations, academia, etc.

TJNA is the only pan African organisation with a presence across the continent working toward tax justice. Since its establishment in 2007, TJNA has been advocating for a system of fair taxation in Africa, a pro-poor approach to taxation that requires being more progressive and reducing illicit financial flows across the continent of Africa. TJNA also invested in enabling citizens and institutions to promote equitable tax systems through research, capacity-building, and policy influencing.

TJNA is proud to bring its pan African lens, expertise and advocacy experience and support ATI members in the implementation of specific three commitments of the ATI Declaration 2025:

  • make tax systems more equitable (commitment 1).
  • implement measures in the combat of illicit financial flows (IFFs) (commitment 3).
  • to enhance the space and capacity of accountability stakeholders to engage in tax matters (commitment 4).

The ATI brings together 63 partner countries, development partners and supporting organisations that declare their strong political commitment to implement the Addis Ababa Action Agenda. The ATI emerged from the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa in July 2015. The Initiative aims to promote fair and effective domestic revenue mobilisation, policy coherence and the social contract through partnerships and knowledge building

The ATI provides access to a vast network of policymakers and practitioners in the tax and development field to (peer-)exchange on an equal footing on current tax and development topics, as recently done during its webinar on property taxation to localise the SDGs with 150 participants. ATI partner countries signal strong interest in receiving technical assistance to DRM reform.
