Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA), in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Economics of Excisable Products Research Unit (REEP) of the University of Cape Town, and the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), will be holding the African Tobacco Tax Consortium Strategy Meeting on May 10th and 11th, 2023, in Diani, Kenya.

The meeting will bring together experts from civil society organizations, inter-governmental organizations, and academic institutions to discuss strategies for promoting fair tobacco tax systems in Africa. Partners will have the opportunity to share experiences, best practices, and challenges related to tobacco taxation and identify opportunities for collaboration.

One of the expectations from the meeting is to produce a roadmap to guide the consortium's activities in the coming year. The roadmap will identify priority areas for action, including advocacy, research, and capacity building, and outline the roles and responsibilities of the consortium's members.

TJNA strongly believes that through joint efforts and aligned strategies with its partners, the consortium can make significant progress towards reducing tobacco consumption, generating government revenue, and improving the well-being of African communities.

The key expected outcome by the consortium is to make significant strides towards reducing the harmful effects of tobacco use in Africa and advocating for Africa's simple, fair, and progressive tobacco tax systems.
